Dal 1973 è regolarmente ospite del Teatro alla Scala (celebri le sue interpretazioni di Rossini e Mozart). Il suo repertorio spazia da Monteverdi a Nono, con particolare attenzione per il genere cameristico e liederistico e per l'opera di Schumann, Schubert e Brahms. La sua carriera lo ha portato a esibirsi in altri importanti ruoli mozartiani e rossiniani all'Opéra di Parigi, al Covent Garden di Londra, a New York e a Chicago. Da diversi anni svolge un'intensa attività come direttore d'orchestra che lo ha portato alla testa di numerose compagini italiane e straniere. Direttore artistico del Teatro “Verdi” di Pisa dal 1991 al 1997 e del Regio di Torino dal 1998 al 2001, è stato anche consulente artistico del Festival “Verdi” di Parma e sovrintendente del Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

Since 1973, he has been a regular guest at the “Teatro La Scala” with a Rossini and Mozart repertoire. His repertoire ranges from Monteverdi to Nono, with particular attention paid to the genres of chamber and lieders and for the operas of Schumann, Schubert and Brahms. His career has taken him to perform at the Paris Opéra, at London's Covent Garden as well as in New York and Chicago, where he has played major parts in works by Mozart and Rossini. For a number of years, he has been busy as a conductor, and this has taken him to the head of numerous Italian and foreign orchestras. He has held the Artistic Direction of the “Teatro Verdi” of Pisa from 1991 to 1997 and that of the “Teatro Regio” of Turin from 1998 to 2001. He was the artistic consultant to the “Festival Verdi” in Parma and superintendent of the “Teatro Massimo” of Palermo.
