Michael Frischenslager,
violin A violinist and teacher of international fame, he studied violin, conduction and musicology at Salzburg, his home town, and also in Cologne, Vienna and Rome. Distinguished violinists who taught him included Theodor Muller, André Gertler, Franz Samohyl and Yehudi Menuhin. After an early period working with orchestras (Wiener Solisten, Wiener Philharmoniker), he dedicated himself intensely to concert activity as a soloist and chamber musician in almost every European country, North America and Asia. Since 1971, he has held the chair in violin at the University of Music in Vienna, in 1984 became president of the string instruments faculty, in 1989 was nominated vice chancellor and, from 1992 to 1996 was university chancellor. Among the pupils of Frischenschlager have been many young soloists and winners of major international competitions, such as, for example, the ‘Paganini’ and the ‘Lipizer’, while others are successfully involved in chamber music groups or work with prestigious symphonic orchestras. Frischenschlager regularly holds masterclasses in the most important academies and universities around the world. He has for years been a member of the jury in major national and international competitions for violin and chamber music. He is president of the International Kreisler Competition and of ESTA (European String Teachers Association) in Austria. In 1990, he founded the 'Internationale SommerAkademie Prag-Wien-Budapest' which holds summer courses of a professional level under the aegis of the University of Music in Vienna. |
